Busta Rhymes Feels ‘Blessed’

Busta Rhymes on the set of the "We Made It" videoMilk was invited to a listening session for Busta Rhymes new album Blessed on Tuesday here in NYC, and what a night it was! For 5 hours, Busta talked about everything from his recent troubles with the law, his newfound sense of appreciation for friendship and family, and the return of original Flipmodian Rah Digga. (Digga, Digga! First name Rashida! Welcome back, girl.)

It was definitely one of the most intimate meetings we’ve had with an artist in a long time. The drinks were flowing and the food and jokes were plentiful. After some sketchy encounters with journalists in the past, Busta made it very clear that he wanted a friendlier atmosphere this go-round.

So, how was the music? Blessed, due on July 1, features an all-star roster and does not disappoint.

Busta gave us the juice on his collaborators and his inspiration while recording:

‘We Made It’ featuring Linkin Park
“I always try to be the first to do certain things, and Linkin Park never did a completely original song with anybody. I’m a groupie for them, and it always felt like they made records just because they loved it. Plus, they’re the first rock group with a real emcee [Mike Shinoda].”

Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park on the set of

‘Let Me Show You’ (produced by Busta and DJ Scratch; features an old Michael Jackson sample)
“This is for the 30 and up crowd,” says Busta. “I came up with the idea and found the sample, but since I don’t know how to use the actual machines, Scratch put it together for me. He’s been with me since the beginning, so I would never give him just a co-producer credit.”

‘I’ma Go and Get Mine…” - “This song is inspired by all the tough guys who go out and pick fights with the good guys. They end up getting their asses whooped, then they say “I’ma go and get mine.”

We won’t give the whole thing away, since Busta told us he likes to record until the very final mastering. But, he’s got one joint featuring Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Common, and John Legend that is undeniable FIRE! (Seriously, after seeing those names together, do you even need to hear it?)

The Summer issue of Milk featuring a full review of Blessed hits stores in June.
