Raphael Saadiq Says D’Angelo’s Next Album Will Be “Super Dirty”

D'Angelo2008 is proving to be the year of the R&B comeback: Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Brandy, Labelle, and next up, D’angelo.

Since the singer’s last album Voodoo dropped in 2000, rumors have swirled about his excessive weight gain and alleged substance abuse. He’s also had several run-ins with the law, including an arrest for assault and disorderly conduct in ‘02 and another for drunk driving and drug possession in ‘05.

But Raphael Saadiq, his friend and frequent collaborator, says that the singer is now reinvigorated and ready to reclaim his spot in music.

“He’s in the studio now. He’s in my studio in North Hollywood,” Saadiq told Milk Magazine. “He’s back workin’. He’s feelin’ good, spirits is right. He looks good too, you know, worked out, lost the weight.”

So, is he bringing that classic D’Angelo sound or will he switch it up a bit?

“He’s gonna be a lil’ different but it’s still…it’s gonna be super dirty whatever it is. It’s just uh, you know, we need so many people to hold up the banner, you know what I mean? So, I’m like ‘Dude, you gotta come wit it.’  You know, I gotta go out here and do what I’m doing right now, but you gotta come wit’ it.”

D’Angelo’s next album is scheduled for a spring 2009 release and will also feature production by
?uestlove of The Roots, according to The Source. In the meantime, you can get a revamped version of the singer’s ‘96 tune ”I Found My Smile Again” on iTunes.

I knew all those nights I was up watching “You Should Be Here” with Raphael and D weren’t in vain! I knew it was too good to ‘just end there’! I knew D’Angelo would come back around on the scene with all the other underground contributions to let the True Fans know that he, like me, and in the least, someone YOU (reading) knows and/or is related to goes through sh-t, and that’s why the gift of music was provided to channel, vent, and create a better outcome than the unpleasant beginning or interim! Yeah, Michael! Thanks for looking out for my homie, Raphael!

Praise the lord. I have been praying for D’angelo. I swear I think I’m his biggest fan ( others claim to be when he was doing great, but I prayed for him to get better). I have been telling others to just believe, all that talent can’t just go to waist. And just wait, when he comes back, better then ever, all the jaws are gonna drop, and everyone will be begging to do music with the royal King of Neo-Soul. I’m praying for you, D’angelo. I never gave up on you- and still bump VooDoo like it just came out. Now hurry, I need some new music to sing to while I’m in the shower….How does it feeeeeeeeeeel!!!!!
