Inside Track: SWV “Weak”

SWV

Since appearing on their 1992 debut It’s About Time, SWV’s “Weak” has become a Quiet Storm and talent show staple around the globe. Yet, surprisingly, the tune almost didn’t get made.

As Milk reveals the truth behind your favorite songs, lead singer Coko explains why she needed convincing to record the group’s biggest hit.

“Weak” was one of the songs that I hated the most that we did. I just didn’t get it. You know, I had just come out of the church, so I was used to singing one way. But, with that song, I had to really like calm down and sing it real mellow. And I didn’t wanna sing it mellow. It took us a long time to record. A lot of crying, a lot of tears, and a lot of hard work. I remember locking myself in the bathroom at the studio just crying, because I did not want to sing that song.

I was very, very surprised by its success and just by the fact that these young girls, like, even know it. And they singing it. That is surprising to me when I see a lot of young kids like “‘Oh, we love ‘Weak,’” but I’m like “How do you even know about that song?” But that’s one of our biggest songs, so it feels good, though.
