Leela James Returns To ‘Do It Again’
When an artist attempts to cover songs by the greats like Sam Cooke, James Brown, and Bobby Womack, it usually ends up a hot musical mess. (For further proof, see here.)
But when news broke that Leela James’ sophomore disc would be full of soul classics, we felt…okay. No, actually happy about it. If anyone can take on Phyllis Hyman’s “You Know How To Love Me” or Bootsy Collins’ “I’d Rather Be With You,” it’s Leela. Her voice is like Gladys, Chaka, and Aretha rolled up in one.
Let’s Do It Again drops March 24, but you can listen to the first single below. And for those of you not acquainted with Ms. James, here she is performing one of her more popular songs, “Good Times.”
“It’s a Man’s Man’s World” (originally performed by James Brown)
