VH1 Misses the Mark with “100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs”
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008VH1’s “100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs” premiered Monday, but I turned away after the first few entries.
Not sure what their criteria was — influence, staying power, catchy-ness — because it looked like they just raided their video archives for all the novelty records.
Wyclef’s “We Tryin to Stay Alive,” LeTigre’s “Cars With The Boom,” PM Dawn’s “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss”? These are the greatest hip-hop songs? And how the hell did they beat Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” in the rankings? Yes, we bow down to “Rapper’s Delight” for taking hip-hop mainstream, but the #2 song of all time? I think not.
