Decoding the Usher Backlash

UsherWhat happened to Usher?

Despite a performance on “Good Morning America” and a heavy marketing push (including a recent video of journalists singing his praises), Here I Stand doesn’t seem to be moving units as effortlessly as Confessions or even 8701.

According to the latest Soundscan report, the disc is just shy of hitting the platinum mark — but that’s a full 3 months after its release and, of course, much lower than its diamond-selling predecessor.

Some think he went off at the mouth too much about the wifey. Others point to the CD’s overall mellowness. But, I actually like the album. Granted, there’s no “Yeah” or “Throwback” on Here, and a heavy ballad like “Moving Mountains” isn’t the best pick for a summertime single, but the disc still had a good 11 or so tracks.

So, is it poor song choice, bad press, ill timing? Tell me — why aren’t folks feeling Here I Stand?
