A Pre-Murder Inc. Ashanti Appears on ‘The Vault’

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

You may have heard murmurs about a new Ashanti album dropping soon called The Vault and wondered, “Why is the album coming out now and how far back do these ‘unreleased’ songs go?”

I’m not really an Ashanti fan, but in the name of journalism, I headed to New York’s Chung King Studios for the listening session on Tuesday to find out the real deal. (more…)

Slim of 112At his album listening party Wednesday at NYC’s Katra Lounge, Slim of 112 made the surprise announcement that Faith Evans would be the “future first lady” of his own M3 label through Asylum.

As T3 of Slum Village spun tracks from Slim’s LoveCrazy solo debut, I asked Greg Browning, Slim’s manager, for details.

Busta Rhymes Regroups for ‘B.O.M.B.’

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Busta RhymesA while back, I was invited along with a bunch of other journalists to a listening session for Busta Rhymes’ new CD Blessed. We kicked it, ate, drank, and even voiced our picks for singles. But when July 1 came and went without the normal release week frenzy, folks whispered that Bussa Bus had cussed out Jimmy Iovine and been kicked off Interscope. (more…)

Avant Performs in NYC for “A Chocolate Affair”

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Milk was invited to “A Chocolate Affair” for Avant Wednesday night here in New York. Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I had so much of the sweet stuff in one sitting - chocolate martinis, strawberries and pineapples dipped in a chocolate fountain, chocolate cake. (You get the point.)

After everyone was good and full, we headed outside for the show. Avant reminds me of Montell Jordan in that it’s easy to forget how many hits he has until he starts singing. I first met him back in 2000 when “Seperated” was just starting to bubble, and now his 5th album — yes, 5th — is due October 28 on Capitol Records. Call him mini R. Kelly if you want, but despite some of the cheesy nods to “back breaking” and belt unbuckling, the man does a pretty good show. Peep more videos below.

Busta Rhymes Feels ‘Blessed’

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Busta Rhymes on the set of the "We Made It" videoMilk was invited to a listening session for Busta Rhymes new album Blessed on Tuesday here in NYC, and what a night it was! For 5 hours, Busta talked about everything from his recent troubles with the law, his newfound sense of appreciation for friendship and family, and the return of original Flipmodian Rah Digga. (Digga, Digga! First name Rashida! Welcome back, girl.)

It was definitely one of the most intimate meetings we’ve had with an artist in a long time. The drinks were flowing and the food and jokes were plentiful. After some sketchy encounters with journalists in the past, Busta made it very clear that he wanted a friendlier atmosphere this go-round.

So, how was the music? Blessed, due on July 1, features an all-star roster and does not disappoint.
