Ciara Talks Fashion & Style in ‘WWD’

Ciara in WWD

ON THE EVOLUTION OF HER STYLE:

“From the very beginning, [my style] was always a reflection of me. I was very vocal, always vocal. It worked for me at that time, and [the label] just let me roll with it. I’m all about the power and the strength right now. I’ve started to just take on that mind-set — ‘Try it! Try something different. You can do this!’”

ON WORKING WITH NEW DESIGNERS:

“You know what? It’s almost like myself — I’m young and haven’t been doing this for a long, long time, so I relate [to young designers]. It’s cool to see them get opportunities to share their creative visions and to actually be successful at it. There is a lot of new energy and a lot of new ideas that these designers are bringing. It’s also cool to know what’s coming, to kind of be on top of something in the early stages.”  – Ciara (WWD)

Monday, October 13th, 2008
A lot of folks were saying Beyonce’s new song was a bite off Ciara with the whole gender-switching concept, but I think the video takes it to another level.

Teddy Riley’s Synthesizer vs. T-Pain’s AutoTune

Teddy Riley & T-Pain

When the conversation of 80’s jackin’ in current music comes up, Prince is often cited as the primary influence. (See Ciara’s “Promise,” Justin’s Futuresex/Lovesounds and The-Dream’s entire album.) But you gotta give props to Teddy Riley when it’s due.

Not only did he helm Snoop’s latest project, but the Harlem native also created New Jack Swing and the seminal sounds of Keith Sweat, Heavy D. and more. So, what does Teddy himself have to say about a certain singer’s take on his popular use of, uh, vocal enhancements?

T-Pain is a great creator, but he needs to do a little more creatively to make real music. He can be one who comes and goes or one who stays. He’s now in his prime and having fun like I did, but in the midst of having fun, I made classics.”

Read on for Teddy’s side of the Guy break-up.

Is it just me…or were the MTV VMA’s really wack?

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Yes, MTV gave us the ubiquitous Lil’ Wayne and T-Pain and threw Lupe and LL in the pit with Travis Barker. Even Ciara came out looking like a young Gayle King.

But where were the REAL stars - you know, the ones who leave us on the edge of the couch wondering what they’ll do or wear next? Jay-Z, Beyonce, you out there? Was Diddy too busy updating his MySpace page? I thought I was watching the Kids Choice Awards for a minute with all those Disney rookies everywhere. There were no crazy fashions, no cursing, no wardrobe malfunctions, nothing. At least if Kanye performed earlier, we could’ve caught a tantrum or two.

I never thought I would say this but…bring back The Source Awards! At least those were some antics I could enjoy. I think even the producers knew how abysmal it was, which is why they put teasers up during the commercials to prevent folks from turning off for good.

I guess it’s official now — the BET Awards is the only music trophy show worth watching. But, since my grandmama warned me about leaving on a sour note, here’s the one thing I enjoyed about the 2008 MTV VMA’s: T.I. and Rihanna’s performance of “Live Your Life.” Note to Atlantic: that song is fire and should’ve been the first single.
