DJ’s and vintage junkies, rejoice! If you’ve ever listened to the radio and scratched your head wondering “where is that sample from?”, this ten-track set of jazz songs that laid the foundation for your favorite hip-hop hits will definitely satisfy.
Our friends at Blue Note not only compiled the original tunes but also their accompanying album art, initial release dates, and their uses in modern songs. Sure, any Tribe fan can hear the beat from “Electric Relaxation” in Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew” or Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” in David McCallum’s “The Edge,” but can you catch the bars Main Source borrowed from Donald Byrd’s “Think Twice” for 1991’s “Lookin’ at the Front Door”? (Hip-hop artists aren’t the only ones digging in the crates. Madonna and actor Brian Austin Green’s use of certain songs shows up as well.) The Roots’ Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson also reflects on his own history with sampling in an accompanying editorial, proving that what’s old will always be new again
