Though he barely dodged doctor’s office territory on the folksy Once Again, John Legend brings back the funk for his first live release. Recorded during his “Show Me” tour, Live is available as audio only or with a companion DVD exclusively through Target.
Not to disappoint his audience, Legend tampers with his catalog only slightly by performing beloved favorites like “Ordinary People” and “Alright” as recorded while adding unique twists to others. “Used To Love U” gets some dancehall flavor, and it’s a nod to the old school for “P.D.A. (We Just Don’t Care)” which incorporates The Blackbyrds’ “Rock Creek Park.” Hip-hop fans will also notice the pulsating bass of Boogie Down Productions’ “I’m Still #1” for Legend’s “Number One.” Later, the crowd gets hype again when a lucky fan is invited on stage for “Slow Dance.” Corinne Bailey Rae also appears for a duet of “Where is the Love” that would make Roberta and Donny proud. A treat for both diehard fans and anyone who’s yet to experience one of his concerts, Live From Philadelphia is well worth the trip to Tar-jay.
