Unless your father is Nat “King” Cole, it’s probably not a good idea to record new vocals beside legendary material. (See Biggie Duets or any recent 2Pac album). Yet, a quarter-century after Thriller broke records and sent Michael Jackson into superstar status, Columbia offers this mishmash effort of digitally remastered originals and twenty-first century remixes.
Will.i.am and Kanye’s updates of “The Girl Is Mine” and “Billie Jean” are fairly tolerable, but Akon’s whiny crooning ruins “Wanna Be Startin Somethin” and Fergie sounds almost constipated on “Beat It 2008.” There are a couple extras like the unreleased ballad “For All Time,” a podcast on the album’s influence, and a choice of three different covers. But if you’re not one of those superfans who collects everything Jackson ever made, don't bother.
